Program Descriptions:

“Understanding and Treating High-Functioning Clients with Alcohol and Substance Use Disorders" - 09/7/2022 from 12-1pm

Many dual diagnosis clients being treated by clinicians at various levels of care are also attending 12-Step programs and receiving differing information that may seemingly contradict their mental health treatment. Therefore, this presentation is intended to help clinicians to synthesize therapeutic and 12-Step models.  There will be a brief overview of evidence-based dual diagnosis treatment and how 12-Step Programs are often involved in that process for many clients. The purpose, intention and limitations of 12-Step programs will be described.  Appropriate and inappropriate integration of 12-Step program concepts, literature and suggestions that compliment dual diagnosis treatment will be described.  Integrated treatment suggestions with be offered in addition to case examples in order to demonstrate how best to combine these treatment modalities.

Integrating the 12-Steps and Clinical Models for Dual Diagnosis Treatment" - 09/21/2022 from 12-1pm

The pandemic has led to an abrupt increase in mental health and addiction issues throughout the country.  This has increased the acuity and demands on mental healthcare professionals while they are simultaneously navigating their own pandemic aftershocks.  Therefore, self-care and burnout prevention have never been more important.  This presentation is a time for providers to examine their own experience and how best to navigate their own personal and professional challenges during this unprecedented time.

“Pandemic Aftershocks: Personal and Professional Impacts" – 10/5/2022 from 12-1pm

This presentation will begin with Sarah’s personal story of addiction and recovery as a high-functioning alcoholic (HFA) used as a case study.  The characteristics, personality traits, recovery and treatment challenges of high-functioning alcoholics will be described based on original interviews and information obtained for my book.  DSM-IV TR and DSM-V diagnostic criteria will be analyzed as it relates to this topic as well as relevant research studies cited.  In addition, the early recovery experience of high-functioning alcoholics will be compared to that of lower functioning alcoholics.  Finally, treatment suggestions will be offered that are unique for the HFA population. There will be time allotted for a question-and-answer period.
