National Alcohol Awareness Month was founded in 1987 by The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD). According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), alcohol use disorder affects an estimated 29 million people ages 12 and over in the United States. Further, 88,000 deaths are attributed to alcohol-related causes annually. Alcohol Awareness Month aims to educate and provide information about alcohol use, foster candid discussion around it, and encourage individuals to seek treatment. Through these efforts, Alcohol Awareness Month has helped to save many lives and continues to be an essential tool in the fight against the effects of alcohol use disorder.
