BCBSRI statement on the Supreme Court ruling on the Affordable Care Act
Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island’s President and CEO, Martha Wofford, issued the following statement in regard to today’s Supreme Court ruling upholding the Affordable Care Act (ACA) by a 7 to 2 vote.
“We applaud the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss the challenge to the Affordable Care Act. The ACA has played a critical role in making healthcare more accessible to millions of people in the United States. Today, 90 percent of Americans have health coverage through their jobs, the individual market, Medicare and Medicaid. This is great progress, but there is still more to be done, especially to make healthcare more affordable. Now more than ever we have to tackle the underlying cost of healthcare and ensure that healthcare is both accessible and affordable for all Americans.
Blue Cross is a longtime supporter of the ACA and the protections it provides to ensure access to high-quality affordable care to all Americans, no matter where they live or what their circumstances may be.
With today’s decision, we reaffirm our vision to passionately lead a state of health and well-being across Rhode Island, for all Rhode Islanders. We are committed to driving health equity and transforming the way care is delivered with a goal to improve quality, reduce costs and improve the experience for everyone who accesses care.
